Death Cab for Cutie, R.E.M., Jim James Contribute New Music to 30 Days, 30 Songs Anti-Trump Campaign
Published Oct 10, 2016As the presidential election in the U.S. gets increasingly intense, so too does the hate for nominee Donald Trump. Now a whole bunch of folks from the music world are getting on the anti-Trump wagon with the newly launched 30 Days, 30 Songs project, which features the likes of R.E.M., Death Cab for Cutie and more.
The project is being spearheaded by writer Dave Eggers and the folks behind 2012's 90 Days, 90 Reasons campaign. As you might expect from the name 30 Days, 30 Songs, the project will feature a mix of new material and previously unheard tracks from the aforementioned R.E.M. and Death Cab for Cutie, as well as My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Aimee Mann, Thao Nguyen, Clipping., Bhi Bhiman and more, with all wanting "a Trump-free America." R.E.M. will specifically contribute a previously unreleased live song.
Right now, Death Cab have kicked off the project with the new song "Million Dollar Loan," which comes with a lyric video by Simian Design. In a statement, Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard had this to say about the band's contribution:
Lyrically, "Million Dollar Loan" deals with a particularly tone deaf moment in Donald Trump's ascent to the Republican nomination. While campaigning in New Hampshire last year, he attempted to cast himself as a self-made man by claiming he built his fortune with just a 'small loan of a million dollars' from his father. Not only has this statement been proven to be wildly untrue, he was so flippant about it. It truly disgusted me. Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unworthy of the honor and responsibility of being President of the United States of America, and in no way, shape or form represents what this country truly stands for. He is beneath us.

All proceeds generated by 30 Days, 30 Songs will be donated to the Center for Popular Democracy (CDP) and its efforts to achieve Universal Voter Registration in the U.S.
