Britney Spears Permitted to Choose Her Own Lawyer
Britney Spears has been allowed to hire her own lawyer to represent her in her conservatorship battle against her father, a judge has ruled.

Britney's court-approved attorney, Samuel Ingham, had previously requested to resign as the singer's legal representative. On Wednesday (July 14), Judge Brenda Penny approved Ingham's request and also allowed Spears to choose her own lawyer. This marks the first time she has been able to select her own legal representation in the 13 years since the conservatorship began.

Spears has already selected her lawyer, and The Guardian reports that she has hired celebrity attorney Mathew Rosengart, who also reps Steven Spielberg and Sean Penn.

In her latest hearing in Los Angeles, Spears once again condemned her father, Jamie Spears. She said, "I was always extremely scared of my dad."

She accused her father of "cruelty" and said she plans to charge him with conservatorship abuse. Spears further said she was forced to take medications, saying, "They were always trying to make me feel like I'm crazy, which I'm not."

Rosengart called for Britney's father to step down from the conservatorship: "There's a real question as to why Mr. Spears does not voluntarily step aside today. Today. Does anybody really believe that Mr. Spears' involvement in the case is in the best interest of Ms. Spears?"

Britney's conservatorship has been the subject of renewed scrutiny since the release of the documentary Framing Britney Spears earlier this year. Since then, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and more have spoken out in support of the singer.
