Lashana Lynch to Become First Black, First Female "Agent 007" in James Bond Franchise
Published Jul 15, 2019Lashana Lynch is taking over famed agent No. 007 from James Bond.
Daniel Craig continues to portray Bond, but in the upcoming Bond 25, his MI6 codename is reportedly given to Lynch's character.
According to the Daily Mail, the upcoming film starts with a retired Bond relaxing in Jamaica. When his old boss M faces a global crisis and calls in 007, however, it is Lynch (not Craig) who walks in.
The British publication's "movie insider" claims:
It's a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he's been replaced as 007 by this stunning woman. Bond, of course, is sexually attracted to the new female 007 and tries his usual seduction tricks, but is baffled when they don't work on a brilliant, young black woman who basically rolls her eyes at him and has no interest in jumping into his bed. Well, certainly not at the beginning.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the lead writer behind Fleabag and Killing Eve, was brought on to Bond 25 in an attempt to modernize the infamously womanizing character at the centre of the Bond franchise.
"I think he's absolutely relevant now," she told the Mail. "[The franchise] has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn't have to. He needs to be true to his character."
Lynch was introduced to blockbuster audiences earlier this year in Captain Marvel, in which she plays fighter pilot Maria Rambeau.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Rami Malek would play the main villain in the latest film in the Bond series. The movie is being directed by Cary Fukunaga.
Bond 25 is currently in production and is reportedly filming in Italy and the U.K. It's slated for release in April 2020.
