A 'Harry Potter' TV Series Is Reportedly Being Developed for HBO Max
Published Jan 25, 2021After much speculation, rumours of a forthcoming Harry Potter television series are one step closer to becoming a reality.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max has "engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers" to brainstorm ideas about how to translate the franchise into a live-action series. So far, no writers or cast members have been officially assigned to the project, though sources have confirmed that top WarnerMedia execs have begun developing the beloved franchise in early meetings.
The series will face PR challenges as the property is controlled by controversial creator J.K. Rowling, who has been heavily criticized over the last year for her stance on transgender and nonbinary identities. The author came under fire in 2020 for insinuating that gender-inclusive language erases the "concept of sex," and later went on a 3,800-word rant about being cancelled for being a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist).
Additionally, HP prequel series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has had to contend with its own scandal, as series regular Johnny Depp recently stepped down from his role following a high-profile court cast where he was labelled a "wife beater" in his marriage to Amber Heard.
