Published Mar 08, 2019Just shy of a year removed from releasing his Hold EP, Rich Aucoin has now lifted the curtain on his third full-length album.Titled Release, the 11-track record arrives May 17 through Haven Sounds.
Produced by Aucoin and drummer Joel Waddell, the album is said to find the songwriter/producer grappling with the concept of mortality, using Disney's 1951 animated feature Alice in Wonderland as a metaphor for the journey. Not unlike his past releases, Aucoin's latest can also be played as an alternate soundtrack to the film.
Alongside the announcement, Aucoin has shared new track "The Mind," an instrumental effort you can hear in the players below. Additionally, four tracks from the aforementioned Hold EP appear in the album's tracklisting: "The Fear," "The Dream," "The Middle" and "Release."
"This track is about the mind and therefore has no lyrics," Aucoin offered of the new single. "Musically, this song has two drum sets on it. The main kit is played by Jeremy Malvin (a.k.a. Chrome Sparks) and the second is carried over from the Release session by Broken Social Scene's Justin Peroff. Ben Talmi played the very rare Therevox slide theremin on the track down at his Virtue & Vice studio in Brooklyn. While Jenn Grant was recorded by Daniel Ledwell at his Echo Lake studio in Nova Scotia. The vocal melody seamlessly switches from male to female vocals with Jenn and my voices being the samples."
Aucoin will be in Austin later this month as part of SXSW. From there, a stop at East Coast Music Week in Halifax will give way to festival dates in the U.K. You can find his tour itinerary below.
