Published May 15, 2020It's release day for Juno-winning folk duo Pharis and Jason Romero, and as they welcome Bet on Love into the world, they have shared a fan-made video for the album track "Roll on My Friend."
This is the culmination of a weeks-long competition, in which the Romeros asked fans to submit videos for the song, with the winner receiving one of their very own Romero brand gourd banjos. They ended up getting more than 60 submissions, ranging from alien animations to a retro crankie booth, a gold rush gambling story on a ranch, and even wood cuts.
So how did they pick a winner? Pharis explains in an announcement, "We were blown away. Choosing a winning video was nearly impossible. But in the end, we were drawn again and again to a journey of a family canoeing up to northern Canada in the 1960's, following their adventure in a way that was engaging, beautiful, and perfectly reminiscent of the spirit of the song."
Watch the winning submission by Mark Reuten below. It features home video footage from his father-in-law's 1964 canoe trip up the Mackenzie River. It's a quintessentially Canadian accompaniment to the rustic song.
Pharis and Jason Romero recently participated in Exclaim!'s Isolation Nation photo series, showing Canadian musicians at home while self-isolating during coronavirus lockdowns.
