Published Mar 19, 2015Headliner Kaytranada, who curated the Boiler Room set at Empire Garage last night (March 18), went last, playing a set that seemed tame compared to what had preceded, but featured a stunning array of genre that engaged every pocket of the crowd that had replaced Rae Sremmurd's rowdy group.
Kaytra leaned heavier on dance music than hip-hop, forgoing the glitch clatter of his excellent debut, Kaytra Todo, in favour of dance floor-pleasers, including a tropical-flavoured "Like I Love You" by Justin Timberlake and a flange-heavy "I'm Really Hot" by Missy Elliott. The set was consistent, but seemed to play it a little too safe; there were few climaxes throughout, as Kaytra rode a pretty solid 125bpm throughout. It might have been a little too mellow to get a crowd going from zero, but at the end of a Boiler Room night that featured BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface and energetic youngsters Rae Sremmurd, it both kept the crowd moving and provided a nice break before Dipset's surprise show later on.
Kaytranada has a new EP coming out on XL, and if his Boiler Room set was any indication, it will be as irresistible to the body as his debut was to the mind.
